24 of 173 champions have no tips at all, and all six of K'Sante's tips are Lee Sin's word for word

Counting ally and enemy tips for all 173 champions in ddragon: 24 have none. K'Sante carries Lee Sin's tips, Milio carries Rakan's, and Akshan and Naafiri have their lore pasted in.

Open K'Sante's tips and the first line reads: "Use Sonic Wave before Dragon's Rage so you can chase the target with Resonating Strike." That is Lee Sin. Riot's ddragon champion data includes tips for playing each champion and tips for playing against them. I counted all 173 champions, and 24 have no tips at all. K'Sante isn't the only one whose tips turned out to be something else entirely.

What the tips field is

Every champion entry in ddragon has two lists, allytips and enemytips. The first is advice for using the champion, the second is how to deal with it, and they're the source for the short tips you see on champion info screens. I compared the Japanese and English data from patch 16.21.1 and read all 173 entries one by one. Source: Riot Games' official ddragon data.

The standard is three and three

In the English data there are 422 ally tips and 392 enemy tips, 814 in total. The most common setup is three of each, and 72 champions, about 42% of the roster, fit that pattern.

Two of the three champions with 8 tips, Illaoi and Quinn, are inflated by sentences that got cut in half (more on that below). The only champion with a genuine 8 is Zyra, who has five enemy tips (seeds break if you step on them, moving the fight wastes her stored seeds; the counterplay advice is oddly specific).

24 champions, about 14% of 173, have empty ally and enemy lists. Newer names like Ambessa, Aurora, Yunara, Zaahen and Locke are there, along with Fiddlesticks and Volibear, who were rebuilt from visuals to kit (maybe the old tips were wiped in the rework and nobody wrote new ones). Then again Mel, Smolder and Hwei are recent and do have tips, so it's not as simple as new champion, no tips.

K'Sante has Lee Sin's, Milio has Rakan's

Reading the actual text turns up stranger things.

ChampionWhat the tips actually are
KSante K'SanteIdentical to Lee Sin's six
Milio MilioRakan's six with the name swapped
Mel MelSame two lines for ally and enemy
Akshan AkshanOne ally tip, and it is the lore
Naafiri NaafiriOne ally tip, and it is the lore

All six of K'Sante's tips, three ally and three enemy, match Lee Sin's word for word. One enemy tip even says "Lee Sin relies heavily on following up with his abilities." Look up how to beat K'Sante and you learn how to beat Lee Sin.

Milio's six tips are Rakan's with the name changed. One says his dash speed scales with movement speed, but Milio doesn't have a dash. "Danger is as fun as you let it be" is also copied exactly from Rakan.

Mel has the same two sentences in both her ally and enemy lists. They tell you to wait until she casts Rebuttal before throwing projectiles at her, which is advice for her opponents, not for the Mel player.

Akshan and Naafiri have just one ally tip each, and it matches their lore text exactly. Akshan's starts with "Raising an eyebrow in the face of danger" and runs through his whole bio. In Japanese it's 208 characters, the longest single tip in the data.

Tips cut in half

The high counts have their own story. Illaoi should have three ally tips, but the sentence around the word Vessel got split, so she shows five. In the Japanese data the word Vessel alone, three characters, counts as a tip, which makes it the shortest one. Quinn is the same: "Attacking a", "Vulnerable", and the rest of the sentence are three separate entries. In the Japanese data only, both of Jax's ally tips are also cut in two, giving him four. 11 champions have a different tip count in Japanese and English.

144 champions actually have their own tips

Add it up: the 24 empty ones, the 2 with lore, K'Sante with Lee Sin's, Milio with Rakan's renamed, and Mel with duplicated lists. That's 29 champions, about 17%, or 1 in 6, whose tips field doesn't really work. Only 144 champions have proper tips written for them.

Wrap-up

By the numbers, tips look neat at around six per champion. Read them and you find blanks, copies of other champions, pasted lore and broken sentences in noticeable amounts. My guess is nobody checks this field closely. When you pick up a new champion, real match data will probably teach you more than the tips.
